How to Prepare for Your Studio Newborn Shoot // Manchester Newborn Photographer

Manchester Newborn Photographer’s advice on preparing for your newborn studio shoot.

Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s most special moments—and capturing those first days is a privilege I never take for granted. As a Manchester newborn photographer with a cosy, natural-light home studio, I’ve created a welcoming space where families can relax while I document this precious chapter.

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your newborn photo session and make the most of our time together.

1. Dress Baby in a Simple Outfit you Love

When you arrive, baby will often be peacefully asleep from the car or pram ride—perfect for getting those dreamy, cosy shots. I recommend dressing your little one in a plain, neutral outfit you’d love to see in your first few images. Avoid anything too tight or fussy, as we’ll likely want to change them into something else later.

2. Outfit Changes Are Sorted

Once we’ve captured those sleepy early shots, you’ll have access to a curated collection of beautiful newborn outfits available at the studio. All clothing is washed, soft, and photo-ready—no need to pack anything extra unless you have a special item you'd love included.

3. Don’t Forget the Baby Essentials

Make sure to bring:

  • Extra nappies and wipes

  • Muslin cloths

  • A dummy (even if rarely used—it can be a great settling tool)

  • Any keepsakes or props you'd like featured (a planet knitted by Nanny or a special gift for example)

4. Bringing a Sibling? Come Prepared

Older siblings are always welcome, and we’ll make time for some sweet sibling portraits. To keep things stress-free:

  • Pack a change of clothes in case of spills or accidents

  • Bring snacks and a quiet activity (book, tablet, toy) to keep them happy while we focus on baby for a short while

  • If they're shy or energetic, don’t worry—we work at their pace and I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to help get those shots in!

5. Your Favourite Drink Is Waiting

Let me know your tea or coffee order in the pre-session questionnaire, and I’ll have it ready for you on arrival. While I capture those first solo baby portraits, you can sip your favourite brew, relax, and enjoy the experience. It’s one of my favourite ways to help parents settle in.

6. Please Help Keep the Studio Spotless (and Cosy!)

My home studio is a clean, calm environment designed for newborns. To keep it that way:

  • I kindly ask everyone to remove shoes at the door

  • Feel free to bring clean indoor shoes, wear nice socks, or go barefoot

This helps maintain a clean, photo-friendly space for your tiny baby—and your photos will look that much better for it.

7. Feed Before or Upon Arrival

A full tummy makes for a happy, sleepy baby. Try feeding before you leave, or you're welcome to do so when you arrive. There's no rush—we always go at baby’s pace. If you’d like feeding photos (bottle or breast), we can always start with these or try to fit them in afterwards - whatever works best for you.

8. Dress the Whole Family in Neutral Tones

My number one tip is to wear something you feel comfortable and happy in. I know first hand how that can be so hard after having a baby. That’s why I have an array of lovely dresses and a couple of nice lounge sets in my client closet that you are welcome to change into when you arrive. I can send you images in advance too.

If you’d prefer to wear something of your own, after my number one tip above, I also usually suggest wearing something neutral and/or earthy in tone. These work well in the natural light studio and with my style of newborn photography. Avoid bold patterns or logos which can be very distracting on images.

Final Thoughts

As a Manchester Newborn Photographer, my aim is to create a calm, enjoyable experience for every family. Whether it’s your first baby or you’re introducing a new sibling, I’ll guide you through every step—from sleepy solo shots to tender family moments.

Have a question before your session? Just drop me a message. I can’t wait to welcome you to my home studio and help you capture beautiful images of your newborn bubble.
